Robin Martin and Kalada Bruce-Jaja may have first met in 1986, not that they knew it. They were born within weeks of each other in Greenwich, South East London. They met 12 years later in Hertfordshire, in a small town called Sawbridgeworth where they both went to The Leventhorpe School. It was here where they’d start playing music together.
An obsession with dodgy school pianos and broken guitars led to hours in practice rooms and a few performances at school music evenings. After forming a temporary band for a charity event which happened to be on the same night as Live 8 (but not in Hyde Park obviously!) they went their separate ways to university.
In 2006, Rob started a band called Paris Revolution and within a year he’d brought in Kal on Guitar and then on Bass and backing vocals. Playing the local haunts of Birmingham and Leicester including Bar Academy and the now defunct legendary Charlotte, Paris Revolution also played Freefest in Loughborough to over 2000 happy punters in the open air. Over the space of a couple years, they recorded 3 EPs and were featured on Leicester Sound radio.
When Paris Revolution came to an end, Rob and Kal didn’t want to stop playing and performing music so they formed…erm…Rob and Kal. Together they perform their own original material and a collection of well known covers, some of which you may already have seen on the popular video sharing site Youtube.
Together in the autumn of 2009 they embarked on the groundbreaking project that is Mubla 2.0 – music made in front of you. Inspired and ambitious, Mubla 2.0 sees Rob and Kal aiming to document the whole process of music creation from start to finish. Through blogs and podcasts, audio and video Mubla 2.0 provides an intimate and revealing insight into the creative methods used by artists in the songwriting process.
Starting with next to nothing and having the aim of finishing with the perfect album some might say it symbolizes the “rock star dream”. Rob and Kal on the other hand would simply prefer us to think of it as music made in front of you.
