Coming up with new parts

November 22nd, 2009 | By Kal

Coming up with new parts for song ideas is easy.

That sounds ridiculously cocky, and of course it is because it only tells half of the story. What I mean by the statement is that for me, if I’m struggling to come up for a part for a song it is because I’m not really feeling the song. No amount of hard work is going to get me a part that I am happy with.

The key is understanding the song and having an idea of the sound you want to finish up with. Then you just play along and something comes out by accident. A good example of that is Vedere. Rob and I were jamming and I hadn’t come up with a guitar part for it. Then as Rob played the introduction on the piano, I played a few notes almost to lead in to what I’d been toiling away with all day and when we heard them, we both knew, that was the part we wanted.

Have a listen and tell me what you think.

Photoshoot in Greenwich VIDEO

November 21st, 2009 | By Kal

Hi guys,

We put together a short video of our exploits in Greenwich for the photoshoot.  Hopefully we seem like we’re having fun!  If you didn’t know already, by sheer  coincidence, Rob and I were born in the same hospital, in Greenwich, so we figured where else to have our first photoshoot than in Greenwich itself.

Greenwich has some really beautiful buildings and views – we were lucky we weren’t born in a dump!  There’s the Maritime College, the Greenwich observatory, the Cutty Sark, the foot tunnels and the Thames itself all of which look stunning at night!  Have a look.

How Fun Can a Photoshoot Be?

November 19th, 2009 | By Kal

Before I start, I think I need to mention this straight away, because it made such a difference.  You may have seen my blog yesterday about being really bad at having my photo taken.  You may have thought ‘what’s he talking about, he just has to stand there’, but seriously it’s not a natural thing for me.  Enough of the moaning, I know, but here’s where Marcus Maschwitz comes in.  Marcus took the photos last night  and his friend Warren came along to help.  Whilst obviously being great at what he does – the guy’s flying out to South Africa next week to work with the Killers – Marcus was also able to keep the atmosphere fun and actually took an interest in us, Rob and Kal.

Without further ado then, it all began at around 7pm outside Cutty Sark station, in what is called Maritime Greenwich.  We met Marcus and Warren and after a quick look at Claire’s map we were off in search of a location.  Thanks have to go to Claire who lives near Greenwich and produced a great map of potential locations for the shoot. It really helped us get around so thank you.

Before long we spotted a Georgian-looking set of buildings, with the only problem being they were surrounded by fairly high Georgian-looking railings.  We found a large metal gate that was slightly ajar and walked past an office manned by a security guard.  In hindsight, the place was a college of music, so it might have been the musical instruments that got us in, but at the time we were sure it was down to James Bond-esque espionage.

After getting our first set of shots out of the way in the grounds of the college, our next location was to be the Greenwich foot tunnels.  As navigator I took a lot of the flak, but I still maintain that the scale of Claire’s otherwise impeccable map was off.  But accidentally on purpose, as we reached a sign saying “Foot Tunnels 1/2 mile” pointing in the direction we had just came from, we spotted what was my favourite location of the night.

The Thames is not known for its beaches – you’d probably struggle to find holiday makers sunning themselves at the best of times.  So at around half 8 on a windy November night, we were on our own.

The waterfront was down a dubiously slippery staircase and a short stumble across a concretey-woody sludge. As we shot, we kept having to move closer and closer to the steps as the tide came in – there was a time when the water was lapping against my Bass.  A few feet got muddy and wet, but all these issues were in the name of perfection.

And the view behind us was perfect, the skyscrapers of Canary Wharf lit the sky, as did the O2 arena – formerly the Millenium Dome.  Between the two was a green laser, cutting across the sky from a hilltop around a mile away – it marking the Greenwich Meridian, where east meets west.  Add that to the water and the occasional passing boat and the “vista” was perfect – and hopefully we got some nice shots.

Stopping in at a pub on the way back along the river, we found out where the foot tunnels were.  As usual with things like this, they were exactly where we had started our night – by the Cutty Sark, and in a somewhat circular fashion, that’s where our photoshoot ended.

I found the whole thing really enjoyable and I hope you can pick that up from what I’ve put here and the video that will go up soon.  It was the first time we’d had a photoshoot with a professional photographer and I think we’ll get what want to get from it. On a personal level, I think I managed to avoid the usual funny faces – but hey, let’s wait until the pictures come in before I get cocky!

Weekend Away & Photoshoot

November 17th, 2009 | By Kal

Hey, Kal here.  Thought I’d just check in this morning to let you know what we’ve been up to over the last few days and what we are doing tonight.  If you listen to our 4th podcast, out soon, you will hear only two voices.  Not those of Rob and myself ie. Rob and Kal, but the two Rs – possibly a poorer version of Brazil’s three Rs, but that is for another day.

Yes – it was Ross and Rob, with my dulcette tones nowhere to be heard.  I was back in Birmingham, the city in which I attended uni, visiting friends, having a great time and maybe writing theme tunes for people on my guitar and on my friend’s new mini keyboard (2 feet long max!).

This was our first “weekend off” for as long as I can remember, but as you will hear, Rob was busy recording another podcast and adding content to the site.  I’ll claim that I was busy practicing my music – and if you believe that, fair play to you.

One thing I will say is that on my return home on Sunday evening, I was really pleased to see all of your comments – I am glad that people are really starting to feel like they can express an opinion on this losing the feeling that it was none of their business. This IS your business!

Photoshoot

That brings me on to tonight.  Rob and I are going for our first photoshoot.  Since we are both Greenwich born, we thought that it would be nice to head back there.  Hopefully that will relax me a bit as I am the least comfortable person in front of a camera ever.  I don’t mind video too much, but when something is capturing you (or your face!) for an instant, you feel pressure to look your best and that pressure probably leads me to pull a funny face, usually without my knowledge.

Hopefully the gale force winds we’ve been having will take my mind off that as I watch the photographer do his damnedest to hold on to his equipment!  The stunning views throughout Greenwich and looking across the Thames should have that effect too.

We promise that the pictures will be up as soon as possible, at which point you can judge for yourself.  Comments about my face won’t be deleted, but they may make me cry!

Kal’s trip to Denmark Street

November 3rd, 2009 | By Kal

As you’ll know if you’ve read a few of the blogs on here, we recently completed our first two day studio session;  Monday and Tuesday last week to be precise.  You can hear the fruits of our labours in the songs section on the website.  As you will hear, they consist of a Piano recordings and Rob’s and my guide vocals, and our next task is to add some flesh to the bones, by way of guitar and bass.

You folk may or may not know that in my last and only “band”, as well as backing vocalist, I was employed as bassist.  At first I didn’t have a bass, but after a short while I bought the bullet and bought a rather nice looking Fender Jazz Bass which you will be able to see in most of the pictures that I feature in, within our Back in the day photo album.

Enough rambling, what’s this got to do with the title, Denmark Street? I’m getting there.

I bought this bass from a kind fellow from the Rayner’s Lane area.  I’d driven for 2 hours at *ahem* exactly 70MPH down the M40 from my day job to get there, so when it was missing a screw I wasn’t exactly going to turn my nose up at it and drive home.  I bought it, but to this day I’m ashamed to say, I never got around to replacing that screw.

But this is Mubla 2.0.  Everything needs to be in top condition and so tonight, I bit the bullet and waded through thousands of crazed Peter Andre fans awaiting the Christmas lights on Oxford Street as I headed to Denmark Street.

For those of you who don’t know, Denmark Street is a quaint side-street in Central London, not far from Tottenham Court Road, Leicester Square or Soho itself. On this street are dozens of Music shops, each with its own very slight niche.  Briefly, I went into a shop with what must have had about one thousand basses inside, but as with my conversations with many of the shopkeepers on that road, they didn’t have what I was looking for.

You’d be surprised at how hard it was to find a screw, but I was more surprised to hear late into the evening, every person I speak to who could not help me suggest another business on the street.  It was almost as if these old fashioned small businesses has banded together to rival the most ranging music super store.

These people love music.  Why else would they all be open at 7pm on a cold Tuesday?  If Denmark Street is not famous anymore, it should be.  True to form I found what I was looking for.  Tucked behind one of the tightly packed shops, up two flights of fairly steep and jaunty stairs was a man surrounded by amp and guitar parts, still working on a guitar.  He had it.

So when you listen to the next versions of our tracks complete with bass lines, if you hear any high notes that don’t twang horribly, the screw will have done it’s job and Denmark Street will have played its part in Mubla 2.0.  I’m thinking about buying a Spanish guitar in the not too distant future, two guesses on where I’ll be going – just don’t expect a blog!

A little update…

October 14th, 2009 | By Rob

Hello, hello…

Rob here and I just thought I’d give you a little update on what’s happening in case you stumble upon this website by chance.

As you’ll notice we have a new project coming very soon called Mubla 2.0. I can’t give you too many details right now but what I will say is that this is something we are both really excited about and something that we believe is original and that you’re all going to really enjoy participating in. All will be revealed on Saturday, October 31st!

In the mean time tread carefully around the site and bare with us if you find any bugs and problems. We are working 24/7 on this in order to get it ready for launch date. If you want to be kept abreast of what’s happening then you can follow us on twitter @robandkal.
